playerLAS VEGAS, NEVADA — Michigan State University junior Trey Augustine (South Lyon, MI) is the winner of this year’s Mike Richter Award, given annually to the top goalie in men’s NCAA Division I ice hockey. Augustine, who was a finalist a year ago, is the first Spartan goaltender to win this award, and the third from the Big Ten since 2021: Minnesota’s Jack LaFontaine in 2021 and Wisconsin’s Kyle McClellan in 2024. The announcement was made tonight during the NCAA’s “Friday Night at the Frozen Four” by the Hockey Commissioners Association (HCA), sponsor of the award.

Augustine finished with a 24-9-1 record which included an 11-5-0 record against ranked opponents and a 10-2 record against teams ranked in the Top 5. Augustine’s 16 wins, .928 save percentage and 2.21 goals against average in Big Ten action led all B1G goaltenders en route to being named Big Ten Goaltender of the Year and First Team All-Big Ten for a second consecutive season.

He set a new career-best with a .929 save percentage on the season, alongside a 2.11 goals against average and 947 saves. He was a Top Ten finalist for the Hobey Baker Memorial Award in addition to being named a finalist for the Mike Richter award for the second straight season. After signing his entry-level contract with the Detroit Red Wings, Augustine concludes his collegiate career second all-time in Michigan State program history with a .922 career save percentage, is fifth all-time in goals against average (2.40) and sixth in career wins (66) in just three seasons played.

The other finalists for this year’s Mike Richter Award were University of Massachusetts junior Michael Hrabal (Prague, Czechia) and Augustana University junior Josh Kotai (Abbotsford, BC).

Mike Richter enjoyed a phenomenal playing career, highlighted by 14 seasons with the New York Rangers, leading them to the Stanley Cup in 1994, their first in 54 years. A member of the Hall of Fame, Richter was outstanding on a number of USA Hockey Teams, most notably the 1988 Olympic Team, the 1991 Canada Cup Team and as the MVP of the 1996 World Cup of Hockey.
